How to Choose Doctoral Gown Color

Gown Color

In general, doctoral gowns are similar to the gowns worn by bachelor's graduates, with the addition of three velvet bands on the sleeves and velvet facing running down the front of the gown.

Doctoral gown fabric color is typically black, and some schools use gowns in the school's colours.

Velvet Color

As for the velvet color, it is either black or the color designated for the field of study in which the doctorate was earned.

However, it should be noted that in the case of the degree of Ph.D., although it is awarded for study in any number of fields, the dark blue velvet of philosophy is always used regardless of the particular field studied.

For example, if not choosing black trim, a Ph.D. in theology would wear velvet gown trim in dark blue (see the picture below). While a Doctor of Theology (Th.D.) would wear scarlet trim, if not choosing black. Here are the velvet colors for the Doctorate Degrees:

PS: We have the basic doctoral gown –the black with black velvet or PhD blue velvet in stock and ready to go. We can also custom make doctoral gowns with choice of a different velvet (other than black or PhD blue), or with a different fabric color (other than black) or with gold piping added to front velvet and to velvet bars on sleeves.
